Brendan Hazelton has been named as the new head coach of the De La Salle wrestling program.
Hazelton succeeds David Prince, who led the Pilots for the past seven seasons. Prince is stepping down to spend more time with his family and focus on professional commitments, but will remain with the program as a volunteer assistant coach.
Hazelton has spent the past four years on the De La Salle coaching staff, serving as assistant coach and co-head coach. Before joining the Pilots, he was an assistant coach at Dakota High School, where he helped develop state champions and numerous All-State wrestlers.
“My expectation is to use the sport of wrestling to develop young men of strong character, mental toughness, discipline and accountability,” Hazelton said. “Success on the mat is important, but the life lessons learned through wrestling are even more valuable. One of my favorite quotes is, ‘Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easier.’ That’s the mindset I strive to instill in every athlete who comes through our program.”
Hazelton said he takes pride in teaching the technical aspects of wrestling while helping athletes understand not only how to execute a technique, but why it works.
“I also believe great coaching is a team effort,” he said. “I’m fortunate to have a dedicated coaching staff that brings grit, energy and a strong work ethic every day. Together, we create an environment where wrestlers are challenged, supported and motivated to reach their full potential. I strive to be a positive influence and insist on good sportsmanship both on and off the mat.”
Athletic Director Casey Wila expressed confidence in Hazelton’s ability to lead the program.
“Coach Hazelton has handled a significant amount of the technical instruction and skill development of our wrestlers,” Wila said. “Over the past several years, he has also taken on additional administrative responsibilities within the wrestling program. We are incredibly confident that he will continue to develop our student-athletes and push the program forward.”
A standout wrestler at L’Anse Creuse High School, Hazelton earned All-State honors twice at the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals. He finished fifth and second in the state, was named Macomb County Wrestler of the Year, and posted a 58-2 record during his senior season.
Hazelton continued his wrestling career at Grand Valley State University, where he became a three-time NCWA All-American and national finalist. He concluded his collegiate career at the University of Dubuque, finishing his COVID-extended senior season with a 14-3 record while also earning NCAA Academic All-America honors.
As he begins his tenure as head coach, Hazelton plans to build upon the foundation established at De La Salle while continuing to evolve the program.
“Over the past four years, I’ve learned what makes this program special,” he said. “I want to continue building a culture centered on hard work, discipline and technical excellence. Having previously coached state champions and numerous All-State wrestlers, I believe in staying true to the philosophy that has produced success.
“At the same time, I’m always looking for ways to improve. Wrestling is constantly evolving, and making small adjustments while embracing new ideas will help keep our program moving forward while maintaining the values that define us.”
